Wenger refuses to be drawn on transfer talk

26 August 2013 16:37

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger continued to play his cards close to his chest when probed about his transfer activity on Monday.

The Frenchman has come under pressure from a section of the club's fans recently, especially in the aftermath of losing their Premier League opener 3-1 to Aston Villa.

Wenger has been linked with a number of high-profile players including the Real Madrid trio of Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil as deadline day approaches, but refused to confirm or deny his interest in them when speaking ahead of Arsenal's UEFA Champions League clash with Fenerbahce on Tuesday.

"I will not give you any names because I think it would be unfair for the players and create some wrong hopes," he said.

"You can see that many of the disputes you have all over the country are because managers speak about players. In our job it's just - be discrete and try to make things happen, that's what we try to do.

"We have not a fixed number (of targets), I just think we are a bit short at the moment. The most important thing is to focus on the quality of the squad we have and to play the football we want to play.

"You can come back to me and say 'yes, but you don't make things happen' but still most important is what happens on the football pitch. The rest? We work very hard on it."

"I still am optimistic and I hope I will not disappoint you."

Arsenal bounced back from their Villa setback to beat Fenerbahce 3-0 last Wednesday in the first leg of their qualifying play-off against the Turkish side.
