Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Penarol steal point from Defensor

26 August 2013 10:57

A repeat of last season's Uruguay Primera Division Final saw Penarol snatch a last-gasp 1-1 draw against Defensor Sporting on Sunday.

Defensor have started their Clausura campaign sluggishly, losing to Liverpool in their opening game, but things looked bright as they held a slender advantage into the dying embers of the match, thanks to Felipe Conceicao's effort.

However, veteran striker Antonio Pacheco netted in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to rescue a point for Diego Alonso's side, who also lost their season opener to River Plate.

Elsewhere, Sud America and El Tanque Sisley continued their perfect start to the season with victories at home on Saturday.

Osvaldo Canobbio’s El Tanque side swatted Juventus aside 2-0, thanks to efforts from striker Santiago Lamanna, who picked up his second goal in as many games, and Luis Machado.

But Sud America had a slightly tougher time against Fenix, with the visitors matching 21st and 45th-minute goals from Santiago Gonzalez through 22-year-old midfielder Nicolas Royon.

Alejandro Apud's side had the final say, however, when Juan Cobelli netted two minutes after the half-time break to earn his side their second consecutive three points.

Nacional and Wanderers also picked up victories on Saturday overcoming Rentistas and Liverpool 1-0 respectively, with Juan Diaz clinching the win for Nacional in the 95th minute.

There was a more convincing victory for Racing though, with Rosaria Martinez’s team trouncing Miramar Misiones 5-0 at the Estadio Osvaldo Roberto as Antonio Gorocito starred with a hat-trick.

The 20-year-old scored just four goals in 18 appearances last season, and is now already close to matching that after building on early efforts from Pablo Lacoste and Enzo Ruiz.

Prolific Danubio striker Liber Quinones also got off the mark on Sunday, with a brace seeing his team sink Cerro 2-1, as the visitors also saw keeper Rodrigo Odriozola sent off.

But Federico Ricca also saw red in the second half after two yellows at the Estadio Jardines del Hipodromo, marring slightly what turned out to be a good victory for Danubio.
