Ligue 1 wrap: Marseille go top, Lyon stunned by Reims

24 August 2013 23:51

Marseille moved to the top of Ligue 1 on Saturday as they edged past Valenciennes 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Andre-Pierre Gignac.

Valenciennes looked to be heading towards a point against last season's runners-up, but Gignac struck six minutes from time, prodding home after Nicolas Penneteau failed to handle Andre Ayew's header from Mathieu Valbuena's well-placed corner.

That kept Marseille's 100 per cent record intact, but there was disappointment for Lyon, who slipped to their first defeat of the season against Reims.

The game at the Stade de Gerland was delayed due to concerns over the state of the playing surface, which had been severely affected by heavy rain in the first half.

Referee Ruddy Buquet postponed the start of the second half because of the conditions, but there was drama when play eventually resumed, Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier sending a penalty over the bar after Jordan Ferri had been felled by Gaetan Courtet.

Lyon were duly punished for that missed opportunity, Reims snatching the points 14 minutes from time as Odair Fortes' deflected strike looped over Anthony Lopes and into the net.

Coupe de France holders Bordeaux earned their first win of the season against Bastia at the Stade Chaban Delmas, 22-year-old attacker Henri Saivet's first-half free-kick proving enough to seal maximum points for Francis Gillot's side.

Montpellier, who beat Paris Saint-Germain to the title in 2011-12, came from behind to take victory against Sochaux at the Stade de la Mosson.

Former PSG defender Siaka Tiene scored the winner in the 94th minute after captain Vitorino Hilton had cancelled out Roy Contout’s opener for Sochaux, who had Cedric Kante sent off midway through the second half.

Evian, like Sochaux, left it late to ensure their Ligue 1 status last term, but their poor start to the new campaign continued as they slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Philippe Montanier's Rennes.

Nelson Oliveira - on loan from Benfica - gave the visitors the lead after 11 minutes, before doubling the advantage with a deflected effort.

Kevin Berigaud pulled one back for Evian with a superb volley four minutes into the second half, but the hosts could not complete the comeback.

Guingamp claimed success in their Breton derby with Lorient, Jocelyn Gourvennec's newly promoted side easing to a 2-0 win at the Stade du Roudourou thanks to a double from striker Mustapha Yatabare.
