Lukaku ready to battle at Chelsea

23 August 2013 10:25

Romelu Lukaku is ready to fight for his place at Chelsea, and would welcome the arrival of Wayne Rooney or Samuel Eto'o.

The 20-year-old Belgian returned to Stamford Bridge after a successful season on loan at West Brom in 2012-13, where he scored 17 Premier League goals.

He is now focused on holding down a regular place in the Chelsea starting line-up, although he will face competition from Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.

The fight for places in Jose Mourinho's line-up could become even more intense should the club be successful in their pursuit of Rooney, while Eto'o is also thought to be on their radar after being made available by Anzhi Makhachkala.

However, rather than being worried that any potential new signings would limit his first-team opportunities, Lukaku would relish the challenge.

"I’m not scared, let them come," he told Chelsea TV. "Every player wants to play and every team wants to be the best that there is, so if the player can improve us, why not?

"I never run away from the competition and it’s something that I’ve liked since the day I started football,

"It’s always good to have someone who can do the same thing as you because then you have to improve."

Torres and Ba have both started under Mourinho this season, with Lukaku having had to settle for a place on the bench in both of Chelsea's opening Premier League matches.

However, he acknowledges that given the talent within the Chelsea squad he has no cause for complaint.

"The competition here and quality of players that we have is very good," he added. "Everyone is improving and every day when you come into training you know that you have to do your very best to be in the team

"I have never been a player who wanted conflict with the coach and never will be a player that will disrupt the team. I want the team to win and, if I’m in the team, it’s okay."

Next up for Chelsea is a crunch Premier League clash against Manchester United on Monday.
