Pellegrini delighted by City´s style

20 August 2013 01:20

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini was pleased with his team's style of play in their 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United on Monday.

Life in the English Premier League started well for the Chilean as David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri scored in the comfortable win at Etihad Stadium.

And it was the way his side played that pleased Pellegrini most, even when they were cruising to victory against a Newcastle side, who had Steven Taylor sent off just before half-time.

"The most pleasing thing is the way the team played the 90 minutes," Pellegrini said.

"We played not dependant on if we were winning by one, or two, or by three goals. We had from the beginning the attitude to play as an aggressive team, an offensive team and we continue during the 90 minutes.

"That for me is very, very important."

Signings Jesus Navas and Fernandinho made their full debuts for City, while Alvaro Negredo was introduced in the 80th minute.

Asked if his team had made a 'dream start' under his watch, Pellegrini said there was still work to do.

"I don't think it's a dream start. It's a very good start. Also, I was very confident that the team will play today well," the Chilean said.

"We work very hard during the pre-season, we were trying another style of football and maybe we must continue improving every week. For the first match, I think we did it very well."

Edin Dzeko impressed up front as he set up the first two goals and the Bosnian was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Pellegrini praised Dzeko for his performance and believes the 27-year-old can produce the form he showed at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga before joining City.

"I trust a lot in Edin Dzeko. It was a pity that he didn't score today because he had a lot of chances. He played very well," Pellegrini said.

"He deserved to score a goal today. I am sure we're going to see this season the Edin Dzeko that Manchester City bought two years ago."

Pellegrini said he was unsure how long defender Vincent Kompany would be sidelined after the Belgian limped off in the second half.
