Neymar needs time, says Martino

19 August 2013 01:03

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has defended his decision to start Neymar on the bench in his side's 7-0 thrashing of Levante on Sunday.

Lionel Messi and Pedro netted braces to go with goals from Alexis Sanchez, Dani Alves and Xavi at Camp Nou, giving Barca the perfect start to their La Liga campaign.

Neymar was introduced in the 64th minute, when Barca were leading 6-0, but Martino said the 21-year-old needed time to find his best form.

"He arrived to a new team after the Confederations Cup. Nobody that played this competition is new in the team apart from him. He arrived on a Monday and had to travel on a Tuesday," he told reporters after the win.

"Obviously we count on him but we need to do it little by little because if we play him straight away to please everyone that is looking forward to seeing Messi and Neymar together we would be acting against the player.

"I aim to him to adapt to the team quickly but without any rush. I'm sure that soon we'll see his best, but now we will give him the time he needs, no pressure to play as soon as possible.

"Obviously if we talked with him he would say he is ready, but managers we think ahead and the season is very long so we have plenty of time for him to adapt."

Messi was under an injury cloud heading into the encounter and came off in the 71st minute with the three points sealed.

Martino said the Argentine superstar understood the need for him to rest so he could complete a long season.

The former Paraguay coach was delighted with his team's performance, particularly in the first half when they netted six times.

"We tried to put pressure on the rival. The new thing today was that we could do it for plenty of time and I wish we could do this every match," Martino said.

"The first half was fantastic, we could use the concepts we've been talking about since my arrival. Ideas that aren't new at all but they were already there and we could refresh them.

"Ideas such as playing by the wings, use creational and direct football, play by the wings are inside the field and put plenty of pressure."
