Butland to consider loan move from Stoke

19 August 2013 19:20

Jack Butland is pragmatic about his short-term chances of becoming Stoke City's first-choice goalkeeper and is open to a loan move.

Asmir Begovic produced a string of fine saves in Stoke's opening Premier League game at Liverpool on Saturday, a fixture they lost 1-0, with the expierenced Thomas Sorensen providing back up from the bench.

That leaves Butland seemingly third in line to feature for the club he joined from Birmingham City in January. He is yet to feature for in a competitive match after making an instant return on loan to St Andrew's for the remainder of last season.

At 20, Butland is happy to be patient in his pursuit of regular top-flight football and is willing to leave on a temporary basis in order to catch the eye of Stoke manager Mark Hughes.

The England Under-21 international told Sky Sports News: "It is difficult because I want to be playing.

"But it's also been a realisation that I've got to picture myself and say, I'm 20, I'm not old, I'm a very, very young goalkeeper in terms of playing in the Premier League, even in the Championship.

"I've got to maybe say 'okay' and sit back and see what's going, but I need to continue playing games.

"If playing in the Premier League doesn't happen this year, then I will be fighting and giving everything I've got to be playing next year.

"We'll see what happens and if a loan move is the right thing to do, then that will happen.

"I just need to do the right thing for my development and my career, which is play games.

"We will see what is the best option and go from there."
