Pochettino delighted with Saints signings

18 August 2013 13:01

Mauricio Pochettino believes that new signings Victor Wanyama and Dejan Lovren can have a big impact in the Premier League this season.

The pair played their part in an encouraging start to the campaign for the south-coast side on Saturday, as they opened with a 1-0 win at West Brom.

Rickie Lambert's penalty ultimately proved the difference, as the England striker capped a dream week - following up his international heroics on debut by dispatching a last-minute spot-kick following Youssouf Mulumbu's foul on Luke Shaw.

However, Pochettino was quick to single out Wanyama and Lovren for particular attention.

"As opposed to last season, we’re a much more competitive team now with these two new signings," said the Argentinian, who also hinted that more new arrivals could be on the way.

"We’re still looking in these last two weeks of the transfer window," he added. "We will see what happens."

Lovren was delighted to pick up a win on his first competitive appearance for Southampton, and credited the travelling fans at The Hawthorns for inspiring their late charge.

"The atmosphere and the fans were amazing," the Croatia international added.

"They were behind us for 90 minutes and they were like a 12th player. They were unbelievable, and it's because of them that we won the game.

"I'm very proud of the team because we've made a very good start and got three points. It was not easy, but this is the Premier League. It's fantastic to play here."
