Wilmots laments Belgium finishing

15 August 2013 00:55

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots believes that his side had enough chances to break the deadlock during the 0-0 draw with France on Wednesday.

The hosts had numerous opportunities to find a breakthrough at Stade Roi Baudouin, but Chelsea’s Kevin de Bruyne dragged an effort wide from close range and Romelu Lukaku failed to finish into an empty net.

And although Wilmots was disappointed that his side failed to score, the 44-year-old was satisfied with their overall performance in the friendly fixture.

"It was a very good match for this early in the season and now we begin preparations for the last 2014 World Cup qualifying matches," he told RTL Radio.

"The team defended well, with three midfielders. This has not always worked but I am happy with my players.

"I want us to win every game and we came to win this friendly match with France. But this time, we missed the chances to score."

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany also rued Belgium’s missed chances and acknowledged that their upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Scotland, Croatia and Wales will be important games to score in.

"We had the best opportunities," the Belgium captain added. "We could have done better to keep the ball at times but it was a very physical game.

"Our next three games will be more important and more difficult but we have waited for these moments. We are ready for it."
