Aulas: Gourcuff would slash wages to join Arsenal

13 August 2013 16:56

Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff would be willing to reduce his salary to move to Arsenal, according to club president Jean-Michel Aulas.

The 27-year-old is said to have been a long-term target of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose only venture into the transfer market so far has been to sign striker Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre.

Injuries and poor form ensured that Gourcuff was very much a peripheral figure at the Stade de Gerland last season, with the France international scoring four goals in 23 appearances.

However, Gourcuff produced an excellent performance as Lyon in opened the new season with a 4-0 home victory over Nice on Saturday, the former Bordeaux and Milan man rounding off the win with a sublime free-kick in added time.

Gourcuff's future, though, with Remi Garde's side is far from secure and, although Aulas is unwilling to let the playmaker leave on loan to another Ligue 1 club, he admitted that Brittany-born player would take a pay cut to move to the Emirates.

"Can you see us paying part of his salary for him to play against us with another French club? We've never considered that and it would be even more stupid now than it was a fortnight ago," Aulas told L'Equipe.

"All that I know, if I understood correctly, is that he was ready to lower his salary to go to Arsenal, but that's not the same thing."

While Gourcuff's status at Lyon still appears to be in doubt, one player who looks to be staying with the club is striker Bafetimbi Gomis as his prospective move to Newcastle United has broken down.

"His circumstances have changed. Newcastle ended talks and we don't have any other offers," Aulas added.

"The most logical solution would be for everyone to get back down to business and for him to prolong for another year. But there are other factors to consider, most notably what Remi Garde wants to do."
