Marseille coach Elie Baup took plenty of positives out of his side's 3-1 win over Guingamp in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
A Dimitri Payet brace and Andre-Pierre Gignac's opener had Marseille 3-0 up after 18 minutes at Stade du Roudourou.
Guingamp fought back in the second half and pulled a goal back through Mustapha Yatabare, who had earlier missed a penalty.
Baup was pleased with his team's performance but rued their inability to put the result beyond doubt in the first half.
"The game started well for us. We had secured a 3-0 (lead) in no time at all and that was important," he said.
"We could even have scored a fourth or fifth goal in the first half. The second half was certainly more difficult. We left more space for the opposition to play.
"There are still a lot of things to work on but it is great to have scored three goals in our opening game."
Baup blamed a lack of fitness for his team's second-half performance, but said that had not come as a surprise.
He was delighted with his side's attacking play and said their build-up was something they could build on.
"We were not easing off, we just have to find our fitness for the whole game and keep playing at a good pace," Baup said.
"We also have to be fit and be able to play until the very last minute. There is nothing surprising about that as it is the first game and there is still a lot of work to do.
"But in regards to our football today, especially offensively, there are a lot of positives.
"We only conceded one and of course we saved the penalty as well. The ball was transferred smoothly between the players. It is very interesting.
"All the squad was involved in the construction of the game. They played all together, collectively. It was very interesting and we have to keep working on this positive."
