Scottish Premiership Wrap: Hearts win Edinburgh derby

11 August 2013 18:52

Hearts grabbed a much-needed boost by winning the first Edinburgh derby of the season 1-0 against Hibernian on Sunday.

The Tynecastle support endured a tough close-season, with their club's existence threatened by financial meltdown, and they have started the Scottish Premiership season with a 15-point deduction.

However, Calum Paterson’s 72nd-minute header sealed a first win of the season for Gary Locke's side against their bitter rivals.

A tempestuous first half saw five players booked by referee Craig Thomson, with chances at a premium.

The game opened up after the break, with Hibs largely on top, but a lack of clinical finishing saw Jamie MacDonald rarely tested in the hosts' net - Tom Taiwo especially guilty, screwing wide from six yards with just the goalkeeper to beat.

And Hearts took advantage of their opponents' sloppiness as Dylan McGowan stormed down the right wing and whipped a superb cross in that Paterson thundered home with his head.

Locke's side were made to work for their win as the hosts piled the pressure on, but did so to seal their first derby win in five games.

Elsewhere, Aberdeen grabbed their second victory in as many games with an impressive 3-1 triumph against Motherwell at Fir Park.

Henri Anier had given the hosts the lead in the first minute with his second league goal of the season and Motherwell's lead lasted past the hour mark.

But Niall McGinn equalised from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute after Stephen McManus fouled Jonny Haynes in the area, before former Motherwell defender Mark Reynolds put Aberdeen ahead 14 minutes later with a firm header from Haynes' free-kick.

And the away side rounded off their victory with six minutes of normal time remaining, McGinn again slotting home from 12 yards after Shaun Hutchinson handled in the box.

There were no goals at Rugby Park as Kilmarnock grabbed their first point of the season against St Johnstone.

Kris Boyd was unfortunate not to score, seeing efforts hit the post and crossbar, as the Perth side held on for a fortunate draw.
