Chelsea capped off their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 friendly win over Serie A's Roma in Washington on Saturday.
Roma opened the scoring 20 minutes in at RFK Stadium, when Erik Lamela was the beneficiary of a howler from Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer but the Blues pulled level just before the hour-mark through Frank Lampard, while a late goal from Romelu Lukaku sealed victory.
In an error-riddled start, Chelsea came close in the third minute after a brilliant flowing move from one end to the other saw Michael Essien shoot from the edge of the box, forcing a tremendous save from Roma's Morgan De Sanctis.
Roma took the lead on 20 minutes thanks to some pure comedy from Schwarzer.
The 40-year-old Australian goalkeeper tried to control a back pass from Ryan Bertrand but it came off his foot awkwardly, bounced off the post, back through his legs and into the path of Lamela, who was grateful for the gift and blasted the ball into the gaping net.
Schwarzer redeemed himself somewhat on the half-hour mark with a smart low save from a crisp Pablo Osvaldo shot, after the Argentine had proved elusive inside the box.
Francesco Totti and Osvaldo were exerting more influence as the half progressed but Chelsea came close to a leveller just before the interval when Kevin De Bruyne showed some trickery, before blasting a right-foot shot just over De Sanctis' crossbar.
Lampard was brought on at half-time as Chelsea rung the changes and stung the palms of De Sanctis with a drive just two minutes into the second period.
As well as Lampard, Chelsea were better for the injection of Ramires, Oscar and Demba Ba at the interval, with the latter in particular causing problems for Roma.
John Terry went close for Chelsea on 56 minutes when he rose well to head a De Bruyne free-kick towards goal and De Sanctis dived brilliantly to his left to pull-off the save, as the game picked up a notch.
Lampard drew Chelsea level on the hour-mark in spectacular fashion, latching onto a pass from Ba before unleashing a trademark thunderbolt from 20-yards out and the English Premier League club were almost in front moments later when De Sanctis saved from Ramires.
Chelsea were denied a penalty when Eden Hazard appeared to be fouled inside the box and Osvaldo could have restored Roma's advantage soon after but substitute goalkeeper Jamal Blackman leapt brilliantly to tip his header over the bar.
It took Chelsea until the 89th minute to score the winner, when substitute Lukaku capitalised on an excellent run from Lampard and a pass from Hazard before firing into an empty net from close range.
