Community Shield: Wigan 0 Manchester United 2

11 August 2013 16:56

Robin van Persie scored twice in a 2-0 win over Wigan to hand new Manchester United boss David Moyes victory in his first competitive match.

A goal in either half from the 30-year-old sealed United's 20th Community Shield triumph, and the first piece of silverware of Moyes' Old Trafford managerial career.

Van Persie broke the deadlock after just six minutes with an exquisite finish that Scott Carson could do nothing about - the Dutchman rising above the static Wigan defence to meet Patrice Evra's cross from the left and placing his header perfectly into the corner.

He doubled his tally just before the hour mark to set the seal on the win, controlling a left-wing cross before his deflected shot wrong-footed Carson.

Injury meant that Moyes was without Wayne Rooney - as speculation continued as to the England international's future - while Nani was also missing. However, there was a starting place for Wilfried Zaha after he impressed during pre-season.

Only four of Wigan's FA Cup-winning side started for Owen Coyle, with new signing James McClean given his debut three days after sealing his move from Sunderland.

A subdued opening half was illuminated by Van Persie's seventh-minute goal, the Dutchman starting and finishing a flowing move with a superb finish.

Wigan fought well for long periods, and they battled back when McClean had their best sight of goal late on in the half. The Republic of Ireland international was wasteful, though, as he blazed his shot across goal after poor defending from United substitute Chris Smalling, on in place of the injured Rafael.

Chances were largely at a premium, but with 14 minutes of the second half played van Persie's second goal secured United's win.

He did well to bring the ball under control before firing in an effort on goal, although a slight deflection off James Perch's left leg was what ultimately deceived Carson.

With both managers making changes in the closing 20 minutes, the game lost its spark as it drifted to a conclusion, although Adnan Januzaj very nearly created a chance in injury time for United.

As it was, it mattered little as the Premier League champions comfortably held on, to give Moyes the perfect start to his Old Trafford reign.
