Pre-Season Friendly: West Brom 2 Bologna 0

10 August 2013 18:36

Nicolas Anelka made it seven from seven in pre-season as West Brom made light work of Italian visitors Bologna to win 2-0 at the Hawthorns.

The Frenchman capped off a fine warm-up campaign with his new club, extending his goal tally in typically calm fashion after an opener from his strike partner Markus Rosenberg in a dominant first-half performance from Albion.

The hosts lined up with a team sheet close to that which might be expected against Southampton in the Premier League opener next weekend, with Anelka making his first appearance at the Hawthorns.

Uruguayan defender Diego Lugano started on the bench with Chris Brunt missing out along with Steven Reid due to injury.

Alessandro Diamanti, a familiar face to Steve Clarke from his West Ham days, was the first to make any telling impact early on with a speculative strike from distance that came to no avail.

West Brom, meanwhile, failed to find any early openings in a quiet first 15 minutes, despite controlling possession. The best chance fell to midfielder Claudio Yacob, who made a poor attempt at a pull back from Graham Dorrans.

Gradually, though, they upped the pace - and Bologna’s rearguard finally succumbed to some West Brom pressure after 32 minutes, with Rosenberg taking his chance from six yards following an Anelka cross.

The same duo combined again only a few minutes later to double the advantage, Anelka this time the recipient after 35 minutes as he finished calmly having rounded the goalkeeper following Rosenberg’s blocked shot.

The goal took the Frenchman's tally to seven since his arrival during the close-season, and from there Bologna never looked like finding a way back.

The Italians pressed at the start of the second half, with Rolando Bianchi heading just over Ben Foster’s crossbar from a Panagiotis Kone cross after 59 minutes.

After a string of changes for both sides, the visitors offered another glimmer of a chance with 15 minutes left as Davide Moscardelli fired wide from 20 yards, but Albion saw out the game in relative comfort.

They could have even added a third when Shane Long's effort was flagged for offside with time running out after brilliant link-up play with Anelka.
