Ferdinand unfazed by testimonial defeat

10 August 2013 03:43

Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United's 3-1 loss to Sevilla in his testimonial match will mean little if they beat Swansea next week.

Manchester United held a testimonial for Ferdinand on Friday at Old Trafford but could not get the job done for the veteran defender as the La Liga club stunned the hosts to win by two goals.

But with the English Premier League season starting on August 17, Ferdinand has claimed a first-up win away to Swansea is much more important to him.

"We wanted to win tonight and we are not happy to lose," Ferdinand said.

"But on Sunday we will make sure we go down there to win.

"Not many players get to play 10 years at one club and I will be proud when I have finished but before that I have got things to win."

The result against Sevilla was another blow for new United manager David Moyes, who has seen the reigning Premier League champions lose twice and draw two more games in their six pre-season fixtures under his watch.

But Ferdinand believes Moyes has done a good job bringing through some of United's younger brigade, including Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj, who was a standout versus Sevilla, and has backed the Scottish manager to succeed at Old Trafford.

"Adnan was our best player tonight," Ferdinand said.

"That is fantastic for the manager.

"We have a new manager in place and everyone needs to get behind him."
