Community Shield Preview: Manchester United v Wigan Athletic

8 August 2013 16:54

Want-away Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is unlikely to face Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield, according to David Moyes.

The England international is a transfer target for Premier League rivals Chelsea, with the Stamford Bridge outfit having two bids rejected during the close-season.

Rooney has featured just once during pre-season in a behind-closed-doors match against Real Betis and missed the club's fixture with AIK in Stockholm on Tuesday with a shoulder injury.

"I don't think he (Rooney) is going to be fit and available," Moyes said. "Of course we are still hoping he will, but I have a feeling he won't make it."

Moyes also confirmed team-mates Jonny Evans and Nani are struggling to be involved with ankle and groin injuries respectively.

But the Scot does have good news on goalkeeper David de Gea and striker Javier Hernandez, with both players likely to be fit for Sunday.

"David has staved his finger - but he's okay," Moyes continued. "He could have played in Sweden and we hope he will be fit for Friday night (Rio Ferdinand's testimonial against Sevilla) and Sunday's Community Shield against Wigan at Wembley.

"Javier has a bit of a hamstring problem that he picked up in training but we didn't want to risk him."

Moyes is hoping to start the campaign with a win and a trophy when they take on the FA Cup winners on Sunday.

And he is keen to build on the job done by Alex Ferguson, who guided the team to a 20th title last term.

"Of course I will be trying to make the Community Shield the first trophy of many," he told Inside United. "But if we win it's really something that will have been earned by Sir Alex.

"It's because of the his good work in the Premier League last season that we're in the Community Shield."

They face a Wigan side who are looking to add to their surprise 1-0 victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City in May.

New manager Owen Coyle has been busy reshaping his squad as he looks to engineer a route back to the Premier League.

James McClean became the club's 10th signing of the close-season when he joined on a three-year deal from Sunderland on Thursday, and he could make his competitive bow against United.
