MLS Wrap: New York go top of the East

5 August 2013 05:20

The New York Red Bulls secured a 3-2 win at Sporting Kansas City, leapfrogging their opponents at the top of the Eastern Conference in MLS.

Northern Irish midfielder Jonny Steele opened the scoring for New York in the 27th minute before Sierra Leone international Kei Kamara sent the home fans into raptures with an equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

It did not take New York long to gain the ascendency in the second half with Fabian Espindola and Lloyd Sam establishing a 3-1 lead after 69 minutes.

Kansas City fought valiantly and while managing to find the back of the net through Dom Dwyer on 90 minutes, they could not find the equaliser to stay on top of the conference.

Real Salt Lake were denied an opportunity to go five points clear on top of the Western Conference after a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids.

In a frenetic opening, the game was locked at 1-1 after nine minutes with Colorado's Deshorn Brown cancelling out Ned Grabavoy's second-minute opener.

Salt Lake took the lead in the 21st minute as Costa Rican striker Alvaro Saborio scored from the spot but were ultimately denied the three points on 71 minutes as Colombian Jaime Castrillon fired home the equaliser.

Bottom of the Eastern Conference, DC United pulled off a surprise result as they stunned Montreal Impact 3-1.

Luis Silva got the strugglers off to a perfect start on 19 minutes with DC holding the lead through to half-time.

Despite Montreal pulling a goal back through Jeb Brovsky in the 52nd minute, DC regrouped with strikes through Conor Doyle and Jared Jeffrey securing a morale-boosting victory.

The Houston Dynamo kept themselves in the top five of the Eastern Conference with a comfortable 3-1 triumph over the Columbus Crew.

Brad Davis, Will Bruin and Cam Weaver were the goalscorers for Houston with Jermaine Taylor scoring an own goal.

In other results on Saturday, the Chicago Fire claimed a 2-1 win at Philadelphia, a Chris Wondolowski brace helped the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-0 victory over Chivas, the Seattle Sounders comfortably accounted for FC Dallas 3-0 and the Portland Timbers fought out a 1-1 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

On Sunday, Matias Laba's second-minute strike powered Toronto to a 1-0 win at the New England Revolution.
