Barcelona not finished in transfer market

5 August 2013 10:45

Barcelona's economic vice-president Javier Faus has insisted that money is available for Gerardo Martino to bolster his defensive options.

The Catalan club are reportedly keen to sign a defender ahead of the transfer window deadline, with Manchester City's Vincent Kompany and Chelsea's David Luiz top of their list.

Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique both spent time on the sidelines last season, meaning Tito Vilanova was forced to field Javier Mascherano, Alex Song and Sergio Busquets as makeshift centre-halves and give youngster Marc Bartra his first-team chance.

The Liga champions were punished for their lack of defensive depth in the UEFA Champions League, beaten 7-0 on aggregate by eventual champions Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

Kompany and Luiz have both been linked with a move to Camp Nou and Faus revealed that funds are in place for Martino to add to his ranks.

"Money won't be a problem in terms of making a signing," he said. "We're not going to go crazy, but our priority in that respect is sporting.

"The financial department will make available the money necessary to pay for a transfer once an agreement has been reached with a club."
