Pre-Season Friendly: Benfica 0 Sao Paulo 2

3 August 2013 23:24

Sao Paulo had their defence to thank after claiming a smash-and-grab 2-0 win over Benfica on Saturday.

The Brazilian outfit came under heavy pressure from their Primeira Liga counterparts for most of the Eusebio Cup game at the Estadio da Luz, but held firm and snatched victory thanks to second-half goals from Aloisio dos Santos and Rafael Toloi.

Benfica started the game strongly and almost went in front after just three minutes when Lima crashed a shot off the woodwork.

New signing Lazar Markovic then had an effort parried away by Rogerio Ceni in the visitors' goal, before Nicolas Gaitan shot over the crossbar as Jorge Jesus' men piled on the pressure.

Lima and Markovic were Benfica's most threatening attacking outlets throughout the first half, and former Partizan Belgrade striker Markovic forced Ceni into two more saves before the interval.

Somehow, the sides went in level at half-time and, even though the Primeira Liga runners-up showed no signs of letting up after the break, it was Sao Paulo who took the lead against the run of play after 52 minutes.

Aloisio slotted coolly past Paulo Lopes to give the visitors an unlikely advantage, and that seemed to boost the confidence of Paulo Autuori's side as home goalkeeper Lopes was again called into action shortly afterwards.

Toloi then stunned Benfica by adding a second with a cheeky backheeled effort from a corner on the hour mark, the referee allowing the goal to stand despite claims from the Portuguese of offside.

Despite the introductions of the likes of Ruben Amorim and Ola John, the home side were unable to mount a comeback as Sao Paulo saw out the game to seal the win.
