Hilario signs new Chelsea deal

1 August 2013 14:51

Goalkeeper Henrique Hilario has signed a new one-year deal at Chelsea.

The 37-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2006 as back-up for first-choice keeper Petr Cech and, even though Chelsea have also signed Mark Schwarzer to provide further competition in goal this close-season, he remains happy to stay put.

The Portuguese was originally named on the club's list of players to be released ahead of the new season, but he has now earned a reprieve following the return of new boss Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge in June.

Hilario indicated that the presence of his compatriot was a key factor in his decision.

"It feels really good to sign a new contract for another year at the club, I'm very proud," He told the club's official website.

"I'm really pleased to be part of this great squad and I'm looking forward to working once again with Jose Mourinho."

The veteran goalkeeper has made 39 appearances for the club in total. He has kept 18 clean sheets in that time, including in his debut against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.
