Polish Ekstraklasa: Jagiellonia Bialystok 0 Lech Poznan 1

30 April 2013 03:37

Lech Poznan have weathered a storm from Jagiellonia Bialystok to win 1-0 and move within two points of Ekstraklasa-leaders Legia Warszawa.

Gergo Lovrencsics scored the only goal of the match for Poznan in the shadows of half-time after Bialystok had dominated the opening half.

The home side peppered Poznan's goal in the second half as well but inaccuracy from Bialystok, and a strong performance from visiting goalkeeper Jasmin Buric, ensured Lech won their fifth-consecutive match to keep the pressure on Legia Warszawa.

Bialystok's wide players managed to cause Poznan's defence plenty of problems in the opening stages of Monday's match and the home side went closest to taking the lead in the 20th minute when Maciej Gajos headed over from a corner.

But after a poor start, Poznan regrouped, with Lovrencsics firing just wide on the half-hour mark before Aleksandar Tonev missed an empty net three minutes later with the hosts' goalkeeper Jakub Slowik off his line.

Bialystok's impressive first half was undone in the 43rd minute when Palestinian defender Alexis Norambuena slipped as he attempted to clear the ball, allowing Lovrencsics to take possession and the Hungarian winger burst into the box before beating another defender and firing home from a tight angle.

Poznan had to hang tough in the second half as first Dawid Plizga and then Gajos fired from long range with Buric producing a fine save to stop the second shot.

Plizga should have equalised for Bialystok in the 78th minute when he headed Dani Quintana's cross over the bar from just a metre out but Poznan held on to climb to 51 points on the Polish league table.

Legia Warszawa lead Poznan by two points with five rounds remaining in the Ekstraklasa season and the top two teams are set to play on May 18 in a match that could decide the title.
