Pardew welcomes Coloccini return

30 April 2013 11:29

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has hailed the return of captain Fabricio Coloccini ahead of their game with West Ham.

Pardew's side sit just one place clear of the relegation zone, five points ahead of 18th-place Wigan, following a poor run of form which has seen them take only a single point and ship 10 goals against Sunderland, West Brom and Liverpool.

The St James' Park outfit now have the worst defensive record in the Premier League and Pardew, who has come under increasing pressure following the defeat by local rivals Sunderland and 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool, is delighted to be able to welcome back Coloccini after seven weeks out with a back injury.

He told The Evening Chronicle: "I think Colo's important this week, no disrespect to the two centre-halves who played against Liverpool.

"I think his leadership is important. Hopefully, he comes through this week, and we can get him out on the pitch with the armband on."

Coloccini's last appearance was in the 4-2 win over Southampton back in February, the 31-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club, and was heavily pursued by Argentine side San Lorenzo in the January transfer window, however, the transfer did not come to fruition because of the Buenos Aires outfit's financial limitations.
