Flynn hails ´worthy champions´ Doncaster

28 April 2013 12:53

Brian Flynn believes his Doncaster Rovers side have earned their League One title after a dramatic final-day victory against Brentford.

Rovers clinched the championship with a last-gasp goal which came about as a result of a break following a 95th-minute Brentford penalty, which was crashed against the bar by the Bees' on-loan striker Marcello Trotta.

However, Flynn, whose contract as temporary manager has now expired, believes the performance is evidence that his side deserve to be league winners.

"We showed in 90-plus minutes exactly why we are worthy champions. We soaked up everything Brentford had and then hit them on the break," he said.

"We stuck to the game-plan and had a few decent chances in the first half, were very solid and strong and played with our heads as well as putting our bodies on the line. That's experience."

Flynn also asserted that he wanted to secure the job on a full-time basis after taking the reins from Dean Saunders following his compatriot's move to Wolves in January.

"When they got the penalty, and I wasn't sure what it was for, a lot goes through your mind, but that is all history now," the Welshman continued.

"We've worked very hard for this and have stuck together and this is what you get if you keep doing what you are good at as we did."

On the other side, Bees boss Uwe Rosler said the manner of the defeat was tough to take and admitted that he had not chosen Trotta to take the late spot-kick.

The German said: "He was not my first-choice taker, but that is not something I want to go into now. We will deal with it internally and then go again.

"The circumstances in which we lost promotion are very difficult to take but we will go away and have a few beers and then regroup to plan for Swindon [in the play-offs]."
