Villas-Boas: Wigan draw could be important

27 April 2013 20:47

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas was left with mixed emotions after his side’s 2-2 draw with Wigan at the DW Stadium.

An early Gareth Bale goal gave Spurs the lead, but strikes from Emmerson Boyce and Callum McManaman flipped the game on its head before Boyce turned into his own net to rescue a point for the visitors.

The draw means Spurs remain fifth in the Premier League, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, and Villas-Boas hopes it could turn out to be a crucial point for his side at the end of the season.

“Normally a point in the Premier League away from home is important but at this stage it’s difficult,” he said.

"But it is good to salvage a point; hopefully it can turn out to be an important point."

The Portuguese went on to highlight the quick-fire nature of Wigan's reply following Bale's opener as crucial to the outcome of the match.

"We did ever so well in the first half, ten shots against their two,” he added.

“Unfortunately for us we couldn’t hold onto the lead for enough time, we conceded straight after and it didn’t give us that confidence that is important after you score a goal.

“When we came back on after half-time we thought we were in control and Wigan scored almost straight away and that really shook our confidence. It seemed to be against the run of play.

“In the second half we managed to come back into the game with a set play. At 2-2 the result was on the edge for both teams with both teams having good chances because everybody felt that a win was important for both teams here.”
