Omiya Ardija extend record run to go top in Japan

27 April 2013 00:01

A fifth-successive win sent Omiya Ardija top of the J League on Friday, as they comfortably disposed of Kashiwa Reysol 4-0.

Last week's victory over local rival Urawa Reds was their 18th without defeat, a new J League record.

And the comprehensive victory in Kashiwa was enough for them to leapfrog Yokohama F Marinos, into top spot.

Omiya, who remain the only unbeaten side in the J League this season, started brightly against the 2011 champions.

And the positive start was rewarded in the 19th minute when Milivoje Novakovic tapped home to round off a swift counter attack.

The lead was doubled just before half time through Shohei Takahashi - the 21-year-old poking in after a short corner found its way into the area.

Kashiwa Reysol have endured a mixed start to the campaign both domestically and in the AFC Champions League.

And they were the architects of their own downfall in the second half, as Hirofumi Watanabe's foul 10 minutes after the break presented Novakovic the chance to double his tall from the penalty spot.

The Slovenian made no mistake, and just eight minutes later the games was sewn up by South Korean striker Young-Cheol Cho, who capatilised on a lucky ricohet and finished comfortably past Takanori Sugeno.

Omiya Ardija failed to add to their tally during the remaining half an hour and cantered to a convincing victory that leaves them on twenty points from their opening 8 fixtures, two points clear of second place.

But their spell at the top may not last long, with Yokohama hosting mid-table Ventforet Kofu on Saturday.

Kashiwa Reysol remain eighth on 10 points.
