Vilanova: Beating Bayern will be difficult

26 April 2013 20:53

Tito Vilanova has conceded that Barcelona will struggle reach the UEFA Champions League final following a first-leg defeat to Bayern Munich.

The Catalan giants suffered a 4-0 mauling at the hands of Jupp Heynckes' side and Vilanova accepts it is unlikely that his charges can turn such a deficit around.

No team has ever come back from a four-goal first-leg loss in the history of the competition, but Vilanova stressed that his team will still approach the game in a positive manner.

He said: "We are Barcelona and we play at home. I won't say we will make it for sure and it's going to be easy.

"But to be fair nobody had overturned a 2-0 in Champions League history and we made it this year versus Milan. Nobody has overturned a 3-0 so four will be much more difficult. But we are Barcelona and we are in debt with our fans.

"First of all we need to show we are able to play well and we are capable of beating Bayern Munich, then, we will see.

"I do not know whether we will be able to score twice in the first half, we are aware of the rival we have, if they make it to the final they would then have made three finals in the past four years, if we made it we would be three out of four so the level of competition is really high."

However, despite that concession, Vilanova does not believe that Barcelona's time at the top of European football is drawing to a close and feels that the current side will be remembered forever for becoming the first Spanish to complete the treble during Pep Guardiola's first season in charge.

He added: "No, I do not think or time is over yet. When you are at this level you have ups and downs, what we did the first year is something we won't be able to repeat but now only us, it is something I don't think any other club will ever make."
