Suarez accepts 10-match ban

26 April 2013 14:45

Luis Suarez will not appeal against the 10-match ban given to him for biting Branislav Ivanovic.

The Football Association announced the striker's decision not to contest the suspension on Friday and Liverpool will now complete the Premier League season without their 30-goal top scorer.

An FA statement read: "Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has not appealed the suspension issued to him by an Independent Regulatory Commission this week.

"A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission upheld The FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will now serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three.

"The suspension begins with immediate effect and applies

to Liverpool FC’s next ten domestic first-team fixtures."

Suarez was shown to bite Chelsea defender Ivanovic on the arm during Sunday's 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Referee Kevin Friend did not see the incident at the time but retrospective action was taken after the official reviewed the footage.

Charges of violent conduct were raised against the striker by the FA and on Thursday an Independent Regulatory Commission handed out the lengthy ban.

British Prime Minister David Cameron waded into the debate, labelling Suarez's actions as "an appalling example to young people in our country".

Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Friday, Cameron added: "I think it is serious, when we are trying to bring up our children properly and when they love football, they do look at football players as role models and we have to recognise that."

It is not the first time Suarez has been banned for biting. In November 2010, while at Ajax, he received a seven-match suspension for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal.

In December 2011 he was handed an eight-game ban after being found guilty by the FA of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.
