Relegation looms for Reading and Queens Park Rangers

26 April 2013 16:25

The first relegation spot could be confirmed this weekend as the bottom two, Reading and Queens Park Rangers, meet at the Madejski Stadium.

Both sides are 10 points from safety with four games remaining and know that a defeat in this fixture will cost them their Premier League status.

A victory may only give either side a brief stay of execution, however, as even with a victory both sides could find themselves relegated to the Championship by Monday night if Aston Villa beat Sunderland.

Harry Redknapp insists that his QPR side will not struggle to get themselves up for the clash and hopes that his squad will maintain their passion even if they are playing at a lower level next term.

"They get paid, they've got to be motivated. If they're not, we'll start paying them again when they are," Redknapp said.

"It shouldn't be hard to keep the players motivated. I keep myself motivated. I left home at 6am.

"I've still got the hunger otherwise I wouldn't do it. It will be a big challenge. You're not just going to walk through that league."

Neither side are in particularly good form going into the game with Reading having failed to win since early February, and Redknapp’s side having not recorded a win in their last five attempts.

New Reading manager Nigel Adkins, who has only seen his side pick up one point from a possible 12 since he took over from Brian McDermott in March, will give a late fitness tests to Wales international Hal Robson-Kanu, Jimmy Kebe and Hope Akpan.

Adam Federici and Jason Roberts are definitely ruled out for the bottom side with ankle and hip injuries respectively.

QPR have only won twice on their travels this season and will be keen to get influential midfielder Adel Taarabt back involved, however the Morocco international faces a late fitness test on his shoulder.

Redknapp’s side will definitely be without striker Bobby Zamora as he serves the final game of his three-match suspension following his sending off against Wigan.
