Hughton pleads for final push

23 April 2013 14:01

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has urged his side to finish the task of securing Premier League survival at the earliest opportunity.

Hughton's men took a big step towards safety with a 2-1 victory over Reading on Saturday, which came thanks to goals from Ryan Bennett and Elliott Bennett.

That result leaves the Carrow Road outfit seven points clear of the relegation zone, but Hughton believes his side are not quite over the finishing line.

"We know we're almost there because we've got 38 points," Hughton told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"But I think it's going to take more, I really do, because Wigan [who sit 18th] are a good side. They're capable of winning games, as are all the teams around us.

"I think we'll certainly need more points than what we've got now. We've got four games to do it."

The win over Reading was just Norwich's second in 17 games and, although Hughton's men have some breathing space, with fixtures against Stoke, Aston Villa, West Brom and Manchester City to come, their fans cannot afford to relax just yet.

Ryan Bennett, who netted the opener on Saturday, was pleased to help bring an end to a run of six games without a win, but knows Norwich face a difficult task to ensure safety.

He said: "There was relief [after beating Reading]. It's been a long time without a win. We've kept positive and I think we reaped the rewards from that.

"We've got a couple of games we can win [but] obviously the last day of the season [at Manchester City] is going to be tough."
