Championship: Hull City 0 Bristol City 0

19 April 2013 23:22

Hull City closed in on automatic promotion from the Championship after a 0-0 draw at home to relegated Bristol City on Friday.

The stalemate at the KC Stadium means Hull stay second on the table, seven points ahead of third-placed Watford, who play Blackburn at home on Saturday.

Hull trail league-leaders Cardiff by six points and the title appears out of reach.

But with just two rounds of the season remaining after this weekend's fixtures, they remain well-placed to finish second, and will be promoted if Watford lose at Vicarage Road.

The point gained was of no use to Bristol City, whose demotion to League One had already been confirmed in a 1-0 home defeat to Birmingham City on Tuesday.

Despite the incentive of all but securing promotion to the top flight, Hull struggled to make an impact against the team from the foot of the Championship.

Robbie Brady sent a long-range effort wide of goal mid-way through the first half, while Gedo had a penalty appeal turned down.

Egyptian striker Gedo set up Stephen Quinn to cross in the 38th minute, but George Boyd headed over.

The visitors mounted one of their rare attacks early in the second half, Steven Davis forcing a save from Hull goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Sam Baldock also went close with a low strike on 70 minutes, Stockdale watching it wide.

Hull had another shout for a penalty turned away with nine minutes to go, when Quinn went down inside the area.

A late effort from David Meyler, saved by Tom Heaton, was the last incident of note, as both teams were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
