Premier League preview: Swansea City v Southampton

18 April 2013 11:02

Pride and prize money look to be the only two things either Swansea City or Southampton could gain out of their clash on Saturday.

With both sides clear of the relegation zone, but not in contention for the European places, there is little to motivate either side at the Liberty Stadium - except for the extra prize money they can secure per every place they climb on the table.

Mauricio Pochettino's Southampton can also climb into the top 10 and gain a mental victory ahead of next season.

They are well placed to get something out of their trip to Wales too, as they are unbeaten in five - including taking something from their past two away clashes.

Swansea, meanwhile, are hanging out for the end of the season - they snapped a three-game losing streak when they held Norwich City away in a 2-2 draw last time.

Manager Michael Laudrup is also looking at a tough run-in with games against Chelsea (fourth), Manchester City (second), Manchester United (first) and Fulham (10th) to come.

With all that considered, Swansea could feasibly drop to as low as 12th, with West Ham only three points behind them.

That would cost Swansea an estimated 2.4million pounds - money that could prove valuable when the transfer window opens.

Southampton could welcome back Luke Shaw (illness) for the clash, but Richard Chaplow (ankle/foot) remains sidelined until next season.

Swansea have the lone concern from the medical room - Neil Taylor (ankle) - who is close to a return from a bad break, despite being ruled out for the season when he incurred the injury in September
