Lambert wants hungry Holman

10 April 2013 12:35

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert says he wants Brett Holman to be unhappy about not playing and hopes it inspires the Australian.

Holman has been used sparingly by Lambert in 2013 and has not played for Aston Villa since March 4, when he came off the bench against Manchester City.

The 29-year-old midfielder admitted last month, while in Australia for the Socceroos' World Cup qualifier versus Oman, that he did not know why Lambert had not been picking him, claiming he is 'not the type of player to go up to a manager' and ask, preferring instead to just work hard.

But Lambert has revealed on Wednesday that he has spoken with Holman since to discuss his situation.

"I've spoken to him (Holman)," Lambert told the Birmingham Mail.

"I had a good chat with him, he is an experienced player and has done really fine since he's been here.

"You don't want people to sit and be happy when they are not in the side.

"You want them to be unhappy."

Lambert added that French attacking midfielder Charles N'Zogbia has been keeping Holman out of the starting line-up, while hinting the former AZ Alkmaar midfielder might be an option in Aston Villa's home game against Fulham on Saturday.

Holman started 15 of 20 Premier League games in 2012 but has since been on the pitch only five times, with just one starting appearance.

"He (Holman) couldn't get in because Charles was playing extremely well," Lambert said.

"He wasn't fit for the other week.

"He is fit now. He has trained this week so he is back in the fray.

"I've got to pick a team that can win a game. That's the only reason."

Holman has a contract with Aston Villa until the end of the 2014/15 Premier League season.
