Brazil legend Ronaldo set for TV role

10 April 2013 19:26

Two-time World Cup winner Ronaldo is set to make a return to football as a media commentator.

The 36-year-old former Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan striker is trying his hand behind the microphone working as a pundit on Brazil's upcoming games in the Confederations Cup.

Ronaldo, one of three players including Zinedine Zidane and Lionel Messi to win FIFA Player of the Year three times, said he had work to do on his knowledge base but is looking forward to the role ahead of the home World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

"I need to start preparing and study football more - especially if the national team is coming to Brazil," he said.

Having slipped down to 18th in the FIFA world rankings, Ronaldo has his own explanations for Brazil's decline.

"I think it was the end of a generation (when he retired) and there was the expectation of a new one taking over, with players like Adriano," he said.

"We hoped he would've been the national team's centre forward, or that Kaka would take the leader's role, or even Ronaldinho , but none of them lived up to it."

Ronaldo said new sensation Neymar would one day be the best player in the world but urged the 21-year-old to move to Europe to further his development.

"Neymar is without a doubt an excellent player. When he decides to go to Europe this boy will be the best player in the world. He is too talented to just limit himself to Brazil," he said.

"He's had offers from European clubs for two years and decided to stick with Santos.

"I think it would have been a perfect time for him to adapt to European football. He would have arrived at the World Cup with more experience."
