Neville to leave Everton

9 April 2013 11:14

Phil Neville will leave Everton at the end of the season, although it remains to be seen if he is set to call time on his playing career.

Neville, 36, announced his impending departure via a statement released through Everton's website on Tuesday.

"It's been an honour to play for and captain Everton Football Club," he said in the statement.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time on Merseyside and will leave with immense pride.

"I would like to thank the manager, chairman, all of the staff and the players at Everton for their continued support during my time at the club. I'd also like to pay a special thanks to the fans, who have been amazing over the past eight years and Everton will always have a place in my heart."

Neville has appeared to struggle at times this season to cope with the pace of the English Premier League, but the veteran may yet seek to extend his playing career.

"I want to continue to play at the top level as long as I physically can, and will be weighing up my options before making a decision on my next move," he said.

"I'll now be doing everything I can to help Everton finish as high up the league table as possible."

Neville began his professional career with Manchester United, earning his senior debut in 1995 and making 263 league appearances for the club, primarily as a fullback but also in a holding midfield role.

He won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League during his time at Old Trafford, before joining Everton in 2005.

Often deployed in midfield by David Moyes, Neville became Everton captain in 2007 and has made 303 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He also won 59 caps for England, with his last international appearance coming in 2007, and is a member of Stuart Pearce's England Under-21 coaching set-up.
