Redknapp ripped off after QPR meltdown

7 April 2013 22:04

QPR manager Harry Redknapp said his team deserved to beat Wigan despite being reduced to 10 men.

Loic Remy looked to have given his side a crucial three points with a superb finish five minutes before time, but Shaun Maloney curled in a 94th-minute free kick to deny the Rs in a 1-1 stalemate.

And Redknapp felt his relegation-threatened side deserved three points after Bobby Zamora's dismissal before half-time.

"(We) didn't deserve that, they deserved to win the game with 10 men," he said.

"It was a fantastic performance from everyone. We've only got to keep the ball in their corner and we give them a chance with another attack.

"You need a bit of luck and we certainly didn't get it today and the fans don't deserve that. If we'd come off with three points that would have given us a massive boost. I would have said we could win four more if we'd won today."

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez, on the other hand, was delighted with their response to going behind, which looked to have closed the gap between QPR and their relegation rivals.

Martinez said: "Overall, very disappointed with (the) performance but extremely proud of the result as it allows us to go into the next seven games with something to learn.

"To get a point in the manner we did in the last minute just speaks volumes about what we've got in that dressing room. Any team that is not on the 39, 40, 41 points has got a job to do and it widens those who can go down."

The Spaniard dismissed the notion his team were distracted by the upcoming FA Cup semi-final date against Millwall, instead pointing out poor performances in the league will put a player's chance of playing at Wembley in doubt.

He continued: "Nobody has been talking about the semi-final and the priority of our season is the league.

"The players won't get the reward of playing that game unless they play well here in the league. The pressure was there in the second half on us to play and win. We need to create more chances."
