Dembele: Spurs´ depth tested

6 April 2013 14:04

Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has called on his team-mates to step up, with Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon ruled out for two weeks.

The two Spurs wingers both made an early exit from their Europa League quarter-final tie with Swiss side Basel, which ended 2-2 at White Hart Lane.

Although Bale's injury is not as bad as first feared, both he and Lennon are set to remain on the sidelines for up to two weeks, missing crucial fixtures. However, Dembele said he believes they have other players in their ranks who can step up to the mark.

"We have to win our games to have something nice, so the injuries are not good timing, but there are other good players who can play well," he told The Times.

"Gareth has been very important for us, but other players have to step up now. We have good players on the bench as well and they can play very well."

Bale - Spurs' top goalscorer with 17 strikes this season - is set to miss crucial games with Everton and the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Basel - but Dembele said team-mate Clint Dempsey is ready to step up to the mark.

He added: "With or without them (the injured players), we can win our games. I remember Clint at Fulham being very important, so I know what he can do.

"He can score important goals. That's the reason I have confidence (in our chances). Everybody knows that Bale and Lennon are very important players for us, so it's another big disappointment.

"They were surprised how good we were offensively, we had many chances. It could have been at least four or five. Our fans will sing like horses (in the return leg)."
