SPL: Kilmarnock 1 St Mirren 1

3 April 2013 23:29

Kris Boyd opened his goalscoring account for Kilmarnock in their 1-1 draw at home to lowly St Mirren on Wednesday.

Boyd, who returned to his boyhood club after a disappointing season with the Portland Timbers in the MLS, hit the back of the net two minutes into the second half, cancelling out Esmael Goncalves' 36th-minute effort.

The result, Kilmarnock's second successive draw at Rugby Park, sends the club into the top six, one point clear of Aberdeen and Dundee United, while St Mirren remain third from bottom.

Kilmarnock made a bright start with James Fowler unleashing an early attempt on goal.

But it was the visitors who had the better of the chances and they eventually made the breakthrough courtesy of Goncalves, nine minutes before the break.

Goncalves, on-loan from Portuguese outfit Rio Ave, put the ball past Cammy Bell after latching onto a delighted David van Zanten pass.

St Mirren had the chance to double their advantage moments later but Steven Thompson fired wide.

Kilmarnock were fortunate to trail by a solitary goal at half-time but they punished St Mirren for their missed chances in front of goal.

Boyd, the SPL's all-time leading goal scorer, got in behind the St Mirren defence before unleashing an unstoppable strike on 47 minutes, his first goal in Scotland's top flight in almost three years.

Kilmarnock and St Mirren had chances to claim maximum points in the second half but both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
