Zorc hopeful on Schmelzer fitness

2 April 2013 18:31

Borussia Dortmund's Michael Zorc says Marcel Schmelzer could be fit to play Malaga in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Key defender Schmelzer suffered a broken nose in Dortmund's Bundesliga match against Stuttgart on Saturday, putting him in doubt for the quarter-final first leg at La Rosaleda.

Speaking ahead of the team's departure to Spain, Zorc said Schmelzer may be passed fit and will wear a protective face mask if he is named in Juergen Klopp's starting line-up.

"We've got two more training sessions in Malaga this evening and tomorrow morning and of course we hope that Marcel Schmelzer will be able to play tomorrow," he said.

"He's very confident, that's a good sign but our medical team will have the final say. We hope that he'll be able to play with a mask.

"In addition we've got two other lightly injured players and we have to wait to see if all of them can play tomorrow."

Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said Dortmund are excited by the prospect of pitting themselves against Champions League debutants Malaga, who topped a group containing Zenit St Petersburg, AC Milan and Anderlecht.

"It's the quarter finals of the Champions League and we are playing against a very attractive opponent," Gundogan said.

"They've been underestimated in the past, but we're not going to make that mistake. We're really looking forward to it and we're happy to be here. Of course we want to keep playing our way and stay successful.

"I think Malaga have a team with many players that are well known in international football. Therefore it's a team with great quality, especially if you look at their offensive players.

"They create many opportunities and have many great players. Obviously they are a very attractive opponent. We need to prevent Malaga from getting chances tomorrow and try to get a good result for the second leg."
