Torres ready for title fight

29 September 2012 19:20

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres insists his side must kick on and ensure they win the English Premier League title after overcoming Arsenal.

The 28-year-old put Chelsea ahead on 20 minutes before a Juan Mata free-kick gave the west London side the lead for a second time following Gervinho's equaliser.

And the former Liverpool man believes the victory can provide a platform for beating other teams at the top of the table and going on to win the league.

"We knew we needed to improve the result we had last season against the top teams," Torres told Sky Sports.

"That was one of the main targets we had this season – winning these types of games to go for the top four and to fight for the title.

"Today was the first big test in a very difficult stadium like the Emirates against Arsenal, a great team. And the result is really good for us."

The Spaniard also expressed delight at getting on the scoresheet alongside his international team-mate Mata.

"It was important to open the scoring away from home as it gives you more time to settle into the game, so I'm very happy for Mata's goal," Torres said.

"Two Spaniards scoring against Arsenal, three more points for Chelsea and it keeps us top."

Torres said Chelsea could further improve this season as they look to adjust to a new style of play following a busy transfer window.

"The kind of players I have in the middle behind me are giving me a lot of support. I have to improve trying to create more chances for the team," he said.

"I haven't had many shots on goal this season but even like this I'm scoring goals.

"I think that the team still has to improve, not just me, everyone, but we are showing as a team that we can play with this different style of football we're playing this season.

"We're at the top so it's a good style, good players and we can dream of a very good season again."
