Ligue 1 preview: PSG looking to close gap

20 September 2012 13:24

PSG will set about moving further up the Ligue 1 pecking order after their 4-1 Champions League demolition of Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday.

The manner of the win, in which Brazilian defender Thiago Silva scored on debut, will have put French clubs on notice as to the depth of their quality.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alex and Javier Pastore were also on target for PSG who moved up to fourth with two consecutive wins after three draws to open the season in Ligue 1.

PSG are away to Bastia on Saturday still six points behind leaders Marseille, who have so far started faultlessly with five wins in five games.

Montpellier tasted their first Champions League action on Tuesday and may find it hard juggling European and domestic football for the first time this season.

The reigning champions are down in 16th having picked up only four points from five games and fell to a 2-1 defeat against an efficient Arsenal side on Tuesday after scoring the opener.

Much of the pre-game focus was on Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud after he fired Montpellier to their maiden Ligue 1 title last year with 21 goals.

Giroud is yet to score for Arsenal in five appearances but Montpellier suffered far more from his absence than the Gunners have from his presence.

The next assignment for the reigning champions is on Friday with Saint-Etienne at home, where they are yet to win this season.

Elie Baup's Marseille have conceded just one goal while scoring eight and remain a legitimate contender, particularly if PSG progress deep into the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Marseille are at home to Evian on Sunday in a game the leaders should collect three points from.

Second-placed Lyon are nipping at Marseille's heels, having dropped only two points to date and have a tough trip to Lille on Sunday.

Lille have started slowly with one win in their opening five games and will have a tough task on their hands with Lyon after their opening Champions League group match with BATE Borisov on Wednesday.

In other matches on Saturday, early surprise packets Lorient (third place) host Nice and Sochaux are at home to Troyes after posting a first win on the back of four losses.

Brest tackle Velenciennes, Reims entertain Nancy, Toulouse welcome Rennes and Bordeaux are at home to Ajaccio.
