Rodgers: Sterling the first of many

14 September 2012 21:05

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says the club's youngsters will get a chance to impress in the first team during the coming months.

Rodgers has already introduced Raheem Sterling to the starting line-up this season, with 17-year-old winger showing considerable promise in English Premier League.

With Liverpool particularly light on numbers up front after the departure of Andy Carroll on loan to West Ham and the club's failure to purchase American attacker Clint Dempsey, Rodgers has argued it is now the perfect opportunity to blood some youngsters.

"It's going to be an opportunity for young players," Rodgers said.

"There has been a lot of money invested in out academy and we have some wonderful people who work there with some great young talent.

"Sometimes it's hard for them to get an opportunity at big clubs and now some of them will get there here and come and play in some games.

"I'll always look to work with what I've got here."

Liverpool's failure to replace Carroll has angered fans and forced the club's owners to defend their transfer policy, though Rodgers insists there is no rift between him and his new bosses.

Rodgers joined Liverpool from Swansea before this season.

"One of the reasons I came here was because of the owners," he said.

"There's no damage been done.

"I've got great respect for the people I work for and there will have been lessons learned from the transfer window."

Liverpool face Sunderland this weekend looking for their first league win of the season.

Rodgers' team are in 18th place after their worst start to a campaign for 50 years.
