Villa pleased with Spain return

9 September 2012 18:20

Spain forward David Villa was delighted about returning to the national team after scoring in their 5-0 friendly win over Saudi Arabia.

The 30-year-old broke his tibia at the FIFA Club World Cup match against Al Sadd in Japan in December last year, which led to him missing the rest of the season and Spain's Euro 2012 triumph.

Nevertheless, the Barcelona star hailed his return and spoke of his affinity with the world and European champions after scoring his 52nd international goal on Friday.

"It was a special moment and (was) nice to return to play after so long. My goal is to accelerate, play a few minutes each day and continue to train with the team," Villa told Marca.

"I have to be grateful for the confidence the coaching staff has had in me. I love coming to (play for) the selection and be with my team-mates. Really, they are like my family.

"I enjoy (being with) them and obviously was eager to be back with the team. I had a hard time being away, but I'm here again.

"I believe that I am far from being a starter. Every day, I feel better and I'm playing these minutes that are important and useful.

"I am the first to know that I have to keep working to get to the point I need to be at."

Vicente del Bosque's side commence their defence of the world title with a qualifier against Georgia on Tuesday.
