Cahill: Gerrard, Lampard a great fit

England's Gary Cahill says experienced midfielders Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard can be successfully paired together.

Former England managers Sven Goran Eriksson, Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello all failed to get the most out of the duo alongside each other.

But Cahill believes Gerrard and Lampard can work effectively together under Roy Hodgson.

"My view can it work? Yeah, because they are two fantastic players," Cahill told reporters on Wednesday.

"Individually, they have played with many other great players and they can adapt their game because they are such good players."

England are aiming to get their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign off to a flying start in Moldova on Friday.

"The lads have only played a few games at the start of the season, so everyone is fit and ready to go," Cahill said.

"I don't think we know too much about Moldova at the minute, but we are blessed with having three or four days leading into the game.

"We have a bit more time to work together with the meetings and everything.

"We will be well drilled come the game and know their strengths and weaknesses."

Meanwhile, Leighton Baines has put his hand up for a starting berth in the absence of injured defender Ashley Cole.

"If the manager selects me then there is an opportunity for me," Baines said.

"I know that Ashley has been fantastic over the years for England, and it has been difficult for anyone to get a look in so if the opportunity comes around then I will take it."
