Johnson eager to impress Hodgson

2 September 2012 11:07

Winger Adam Johnson is confident of his long-term England future following a transfer to Sunderland.

The talented attacker struggled to hold down a regular place at Manchester City and opted to move during the recent transfer window in search of first-team football.

And after making the move, Johnson is sure England coach Roy Hodgson will not be forgetting about him anytime soon.

"You do get seen more – and have better opportunities to be seen – by England managers when you play for top-four clubs, it's a fact," Johnson told the Daily Mirror.

"But I'm part of the England set-up and I'm hoping that won't change."

Johnson has been selected for England's World Cup squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.

He hopes his inclusion in the squad will become a regular occurrence while he's with Sunderland.

"Roy Hodgson has been brilliant with me since he took over the England team. I'm sure he won't forget me," Johnson said.

"He has said he wants his players to be playing regular first-team football – that's something I wasn't doing at Manchester City, but I hope it will be different for me here at Sunderland.

"It might have been a bit different if I had joined Sunderland a couple of years ago before I had played for England."
