Hughes stays positive as QPR slump

2 October 2012 14:02

Mark Hughes has vowed to keep Queens Park Rangers above the English Premier League relegation zone despite their slow start to the season.

QPR, who narrowly preserved their elite status last campaign, remain winless and rooted to the bottom of the table after six matches.

Hughes invested heavily in the squad after taking over as manager in January before welcoming 12 new faces in the recent transfer window.

But following Monday's 2-1 loss at home to West Ham United, Hughes admits the performances have been unacceptable.

"We've had a big investment in the club and we're looking to improve this year. And we will," Hughes said.

"It's very, very early days. But until we get positive results on the board, then obviously everything is up for debate and the focus starts to come on the club as a whole.

"We just need to start winning football matches. If we do that, then it goes away."

QPR's hopes of victory at Loftus Road were dented when Samba Diakite was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 75th minute.

"Two similar challenges, I wouldn't say they were reckless," Hughes said.

"The first one was a genuine attempt to get the ball. The lad's just nicked it away from him. It doesn't warrant a yellow card in my view. Some referees give them, some don't.

"I think the second challenge, his eyes were solely on the ball and he was just looking to intercept it.

"It was harsh so maybe the fact that he's been in that situation before, referees are remembering that because he doesn't seem to be getting any leeway, unfortunately."

QPR's search for their first win of the season takes them to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
