Hammers failed to nail QPR, says Allardyce

2 October 2012 00:53

Sam Allardyce has expressed his delight at West Ham's 2-1 victory over QPR, but said they should have won by a larger margin.

First-half goals from Matt Jarvis and Ricardo Vaz Te secured West Ham's first away victory of the Premier League season, despite a curled effort from Adel Taarabt threatening a Hoops revival in the second half.

The West Ham boss praised his side in the way they controlled much of the match, taking the game to Mark Hughes' men, but added they should really have made their domination count by increasing the scoreline.

"We showed two sides of our team," Allardyce said.

"The one side was the great first half we gave and completely dominated the opposition on their own ground.

"We are a newly promoted team and we have taken the game to QPR and led through two quality finishes. Let's face it, it could have been more than 2-0 at half-time.

"Adel Taarabt's brilliant strike to make it 2-1 was a worry for us because it lifted the crowd and their players and then we had to show the other side of our character which is good honest hard work and defending. After they had a man sent off, we should really have seen the game off with more goals."

QPR manager Hughes expressed his disappointment at his side's performance, and said his team are much better than their current form represents with the club propping up the table.

The former Manchester City coach thought a comeback was on the cards after the Moroccan's delightful finish, but the sending off of Samba Diakite denied them any chance of getting something from the game.

Hughes said: "We were very poor, certainly in the first half where we were second to every ball and didn't get anywhere near to the level we need to be at to get results in the Premier League.

"In the second half we made a better fist of it. Adel Taarabt came on and scored great goal which gave us a bit of momentum and at that point I fancied us to get us the second goal. But the sending off has obviously killed that momentum.

"We are desperately disappointed about that first-half performance because we are much better than that."
