Schalke alert to Olympiacos threat

20 November 2012 21:57

Schalke coach Huub Stevens does not know what to expect from Greek champions Olympiacos when they play on Wednesday.

Champions League Group B leaders Schalke travelled to Greece on the opening matchday in September and secured a 2-1 win, before winning two further matches to be in contention to qualify for the last 16.

"I don't know how Olympiacos will play. All I know is that they played well in the Greek championship and got good results," Stevens said.

"They also won their last two Champions League matches.

"We need to bring our quality in the game. We must try to make it difficult for them.

"This is a home game for us and we hope that we can reach our goal with the support of our fans."

Stevens also said it would be fantastic for German football if all three teams - Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich - could qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

All three sides are top of their respective groups but are not guaranteed of a place in the next round.

"I think that would be great for German football if Bayern Munich, Schalke, and Borussia Dortmund would advance the next round," he said.

"But at the moment we did not advance the next round yet. All three German teams did not advance to the next round yet. We are still all trying. But it would be great. That is obvious."

Olympiacos have won their past two matches and another win will see them move above Schalke heading into the final group match.

Coach Leonardo Jardim heads to Germany with a clear goal of getting the three points and is confident his side have enough quality to achieve the result.

"We have developed. We are much stronger than we were in the first game. Schalke 04 still has the same level and the same dynamic," he said.

"You can see in every Champions League match that Olympiacos are always getting better and better. We have managed to win two games. So our goal is clear: we want to win. We want to have a good game and give our best so that we have a better chance in the next game and can advance to the next round.

"We are here to win. We want to advance to the next round. We have to stop the strong offensive of Schalke 04 and we have to use every opportunity to score a goal if we want to succeed."
