International friendly preview: Argentina v Brazil

20 November 2012 07:18

Brazil will be out to secure their second straight Superclassic of the Americas title over Argentina when the rivals clash on Wednesday.

Brazil, who won the opening leg of the series 2-1 in Goiania in September, can clinch the trophy with a draw at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Argentina, who lost last year's series 2-0 on aggregate, can force a penalty shootout with a win by one goal.

The teams, made up of South American-based players, were due to meet at Resistencia's Estadio Centenario in October but were unable to play because of a power failure.

Brazil coach Mano Menezes has named a strong side for the rescheduled fixture, with forwards Neymar and Leandro Damiao selected alongside domestic top scorer Fred.

Fred, who has netted 19 goals this season, scored twice in Fluminense's 3-2 win over Palmeiras that clinched their second Brazil Serie A title in three years on Sunday.

Other Fluminense players picked include defender Carlinhos, playmaker Thiago Neves, midfielder Jean and former Liverpool reserve goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri.

Brazil, who have qualified for the 2014 World Cup as hosts, are unbeaten in their past seven matches with six wins and one draw.

Argentina have enjoyed a similar vein of form, with the loss to Brazil their only defeat in 13 games since November 2011.

Former Liverpool attacker Maxi Rodriguez is the most notable inclusion for Argentina, who will have to make do with an inexperienced squad.
