Welbeck´s time will come, says Ferguson

16 November 2012 18:27

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Danny Welbeck‘s future will be as a centre-forward.

But Ferguson has urged the 21-year-old to be patient following the form of the club's other attackers.

With the arrival of Robin van Persie and the form of Javier Hernandez, to add to the attacking talents of Wayne Rooney, United boast enviable striking talent which has led the England international being restricted to appearances on the wing.

Despite the current situation, Ferguson has reiterated his desire to play Welbeck in a central role in the future, describing the striker as a 'natural' in that position.

"With Robin coming in and when we've got Wayne as well, you tend to rely on the experience of these players," he said.

"They are great players too. What we have to try and do is alternate selections so that Danny feels he is making a contribution.

"At the moment, we have tended to play him wide left. I think he's capable of playing there. He is a threat coming in off the wing and he has done that many times. But I think he is a natural centre-forward."

United are not short of options up front but Ferguson recognised Welbeck's impressive displays for his country in a central position.

"Danny's best form has actually been with England. He has not had the opportunities with us to play centre-forward all the time. But that will come," he said.

"We've tended to play him wide left, which is maybe a little bit unfair to him. But nonetheless he has shown with his form with England that he can be a real asset to us through the middle. That will come for him."
